bvado You can delete the only real device on which Col reminder is installed... and now I'm locked out. The fact that you remove the device doesn't seem to be synced to the phone, so the option to to Add Reminder from PC doesn't re-appear on the device. Web subscription is still active but I bricked it now🙂 Even signing off and signing on again didn't work.

Will add a sync to the phone if you delete a phone device.

bvado You cannot delete the "current" device, which is understandable. However, the option to remove the current device is offered. Don't🙂 When you delete it, you get the message "successfully deleted" but the browser reappears immediately

bvado You can delete a second browser. Notifications aren't shown there anymore... until you activate that browser. It just re-appears.

Yes this works as designed. Otherwise you have no chance to readd it again.
If you don't want that the browser will be readded you need to sign off on that browser.

bvado All my reminders are set to repeating notifications. I had two reminders which notification went of several times while my laptop was closed (sleep). In the mean time, I dismissed them on the device so they don't notify anymore. When I relaunched my laptop, all these notifications were shown: one of the reminders had 12 notifications, the other 9, probably the amount of times they notified on my mobile phone. If you launch the computer after a while, all notifications that were triggered during that time off are triggered. I can imagine that is not desired, especially after a weekend or a vacation

The notifications are getting queued from the system and will be send ones they are again online.
I will check if I find a way to remove the notification from the queue if you dismiss it on your phone.

bvado You are aware of the notification message in Chrome that doesn't appear. Firefox does the same, by the way. If you don't enable it in the browser, then you don't see any device in the settings. There should be some message here to tell the user that (s)he has to enable these notifications before anything appears there. Now it just looks like a bug.

bvado the interface is too different compared with the app. It would be more user friendly if you create recognisable inputs: select the Misc reminder by default, but allow the user to select all the different reminder types them self:
Birthday reminder (ocher yellow)
Phone call (red)
Parking (blue, for consistency because I don't know whether this will ever be used on a desktop🙂 )
Misc reminder (green)

Parking is not planned to add and Birthday currently too.
So I don't show any categories.

But I understand what you mean and will think how I can difference the contacts from the main text reminder.

bvado While this is probably on the planning, I report it anyway: allow all input fields that exists in the app
e.g. misc reminder: allow date/time, location, quick selection minutes, smart time, repetition (!!)
To be agile, this would be my priority list:
Repetition
smart time
quick selection minutes
location

Yes of course it is planned to add the most.
Currently planned are "Quick selection minutes", "Smart Time", "Repeat".
And in the same priority as you have written ;-) except the location feature.

bvado Try to use the same icons/look-and-feel from the app. E.g.: the priorities are now stars, while in the app, they're squares with numbers.

bvado Management of all notifications on your device(s) would be nice so that you can adjust reminders from your desktop. In fact, this was what I was expecting that you created 😉 But I can imagine that will require a lot of extra work🙂

This is only the first step. The final phase should be exactly what you want.
But as you also mentioned it is a lot of work because I need to recode the database on the phone to a web database and sync the data.

Since my test with multiple browsers, I got multiple notifications on my desktop, so I deactivated Firefox. I logged out and I removed Firefox in the settings using Chrome. But Firefox kept notifying. I had to block the notifications for Col Reminder Web

OK strange because after you are loggin out it should of course also stop messaging you.
Will check this.

bvado The use of "contacts" isn't clear and doesn't seem to work. First, when I clicked the "contacts" input, nothing happened. A day later, I got the oauth window to allow col reminder web to read my contacts. I allowed that (I assume the error about col reminder web not being signed is just temporarily) and now, when I click the contacts input, two contacts appear: those that are registered without last name. Other contacts don't appear here.
Manual entry of a contact doesn't work. While this is possible when you create a phone reminder in the app, now it doesn't seem to be possible.

A new version is up with a few fixes. More to come.

Can you please retry this.
Before you need to log out and log in again.

I have signed off, force refreshed the page, signed on again. Contacts still don't show up.

Strange behaviour: the only contacts I see, are the ones that have a dash ( - ) as last name. That's a remainder of an old phone for contacts I didn't know the last name :-)

I tried to change those: I removed the last name or entered it correctly, I signed off and signed on again. There was a change, however, now I don't see any contact anymore. I added the dash back to one of the contacts last name and it re-appeared in the interface. But only that one. I tried typing part of the name and no results were found, unless I type in part of the single one that is now shown in the drop-down menu.

Can you please open the "Console" in Chrome.
Open the website and tap CTRL+SHIFT+I.

Now you should see the "Console" if not please click the tab "console".

Click the contacts fields and wait until it is finishing loading.
Do you see any error message in red in the console?

If yes please send me the console, click inside the console with the right mouse and select "save as".

bvado Missed reminders on the desktop are buffered and all shown at once

Seems there exists no "delete/remove" for the web messages :-(
I will check further.

But I have an alternative found.
I can set the notification sent to the web with an lifetime of 10 seconds.
If the device is offline more than 10 seconds the notifications will be not delivered.

If your device is offline you already got the notifications on your phone, so no need to display it on your PC if it is online.
No matter if you have already dismissed it or not.

What do you think?

Can't reproduce this.
Just installed Firefox and signed on.
Enabled notifications and got the notification.

Afterwards I have signed out from Firefox and deleted the device with Chrome.
No notification to Firefox anymore.

Can you reproduce this or was it only once?

Hi, I see that there are several enhancements made. It's a lot better already!

I disabled the notifications because I was overwhelmed with notifications after a two days off ;-) The interface gave a clear error message asking to enable notifications. Great!
Great to see that the stars are changed to squares with numbers: this is much clearer now. One remark though: if you select another priority, the 0 doesn't change visually. The correct priority is correctly sent to the phone though.
For debug reasons, I opened the interface in an incognito modus. It seems that cookies weren't accepted. That was shown as an error in the console, not on the screen. Probably, most people will have cookies allowed, but it would be an improvement to check for cookies as well. (see zip file)
About the contacts: that log file is also in the zip file. There's indeed an error Error getting peoples! TypeError: Cannot read property '0' of undefined. Stacktrace included in the log
About the life time of the notifications: is there a possibility to read the Notification Reminder setting? If so, you could set a lifetime equal to the Reminder Interval.
- E.g: you have set a Notification Reminder with Reminder Interval = 10 minutes
- The desktop is offline and a notification is shown on the phone. A notification is sent to the desktop with a lifetime of 10 minutes.
- The notification is not dismissed on the phone and 10 minutes later, it sounds again. The first notification to the desktop has expired, but a new one is triggered.
- When the user opens the desktop, say 15 minutes after the first notification, the notification will be shown. Once. And that's ok. Maybe the user missed the notification on the phone.
- If the user has dismissed the notification and opens the desktop within 10 minutes, the notification will be shown. Once. That's acceptable in my opinion. What are the odds anyway? If the user opens the desktop the next day, the notification has expired and won't be delivered.
- The problem is caused mainly by the fact that a Reminder Interval is set. That causes a wave of notifications. In the case that the user didn't have a Reminder Interval configured, you could fall back to a default, but I'd prefer a longer timespan than 10s. I'm thinking: during lunch break. So I'd prefer a time span of an hour. You don't know whether it's dismissed or not, so in case the user didn't dismiss the notification, it'll be visible when the user returns from lunch break :-) If the notification is dismissed, that I think it's acceptable that it's still shown once within this one hour time frame.
About the notifications in Firefox: I wanted to test this, but now it seems that desktop notifications are broken: I added a reminder, both using Chrome and using the phone, but when the notification was shown on the phone, the desktop didn't react. Chrome nor Firefox gave a notification... Notifications for older reminders aren't shown either.

I hope I have now also fixed this problem.
I can't reproduce so please test it again if you see now your contacts.

Great idea, but I can't access the settings on the phone.
This is possible once the reminder data is also saved in the cloud database.
Currently it is all saved locally on your phone.

I have now set it to 10 seconds, but I will add an setting in the web.
So every user can set this at there own in the meantime.

bvado About the notifications in Firefox: I wanted to test this, but now it seems that desktop notifications are broken: I added a reminder, both using Chrome and using the phone, but when the notification was shown on the phone, the desktop didn't react. Is it possible that you updated the stable app on August 15, but didn't upload a new alpha version? I now have version 3.6.4.1 (555) on my phone, which doesn't support the web version ;-)

Yes I have made a small update to the main version, but you should not get this because you are a BETA tester!?!

Browser sign on/off

I can confirm that I can reproduce the bug where I sign off and remove a browser, then the notification keeps coming from that browser. But it's a complex problem, very hard to pin-point the problem. While trying to reproduce this, I see a little different behaviour:

I sign on. First in Chrome, then in Firefox.
In both browsers I go to the settings and I see all devices listed, in this order (I thought that was important):
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Phone
A reminder goes off, both browsers show a notification
I sign off in Chrome
I verify in Firefox. All devices are still there.
A reminder goes off. Only Chrome shows a notification!

At that moment, I thought that the last added browser was removed. To check that, I signed off from Firefox as well. Now I don't have any desktop browser signed on. Chrome keeps giving notifications for all reminders. Firefox doesn't notify anymore.

I sign on in Firefox. In Settings, I can still see Chrome.
The reminders are still shown in Chrome. Firefox doesn't show any reminder anymore
With only Firefox signed on, I create a new reminder. It's shown in Chrome only.
In Firefox, I remove the Chrome instance. When I refresh the page, Chrome is still gone.
A reminder is shown on the phone. Desktop remains quiet. I expected Firefox to show a notification here
I sign in with Chrome. I can see Chrome, Firefox and the phone.
A notification goes off. Desktop remains quiet. I expected both Firefox and Chrome to show a notification
I remove Firefox in the Chrome instance
A notification goes off. Desktop remains quiet.
In COL Reminder on the phone, I sign off, then sign on again.
A notification goes off. Desktop remains quiet.
I restarted the phone.
Immediately after start, three reminders sound because they were all three active before reboot. Desktop remains silent...

...which means that I have no idea how I can re-enable these browser notifications now.

Contacts

The contacts are shown in the web interface. But now the phone doesn't want to cooperate ;-)
When I add a reminder with a contact that I selected in the web interface, COL Reminder on the phone shows the error:

For completeness: On the phone, I'm signed on with the same account and the same contacts are available.

Contacts nice to have

I have some contacts without first name or last name, but only a company name entered. It's a very special case, I know. In this case, the Google Contacts app shows the company name in this case. In Col Reminder Web, no name is displayed.

After sign out I delete the token to send messages to the browser.
The device is of course still visible from another browser but you see now a new icon that the messaging is deactivated.

On sign in I generate a new token and the messaging should work again.

Contacts

You should see now the company name if no real name exists.
Also you should now be able to send a contact to you phone without the error message on the phone.

Situation at start: since last time, I was signed off in all browsers, so I started clean. I force-refreshed in both browsers.
✅ Sign on in Chrome, create a new reminder: notification is shown in Chrome
✅ Sign on in Firefox, create a new reminder: notification is shown in both
✅ Sign out in Chrome:
- "no notification" indication shown next to Chrome in the settings shown by Firefox. Lovely that it appears immediately after signing out in Chrome!
- Create a new reminder: notification is only shown in Firefox.
❌Sign out of Firefox. Create a new notification. Notification is still shown by Firefox. Sign in with Chrome. Firefox is still there, without the icon indicating that it won't receive notifications. This last point is correct, as Firefox still shows notifications while it shouldn't.
❌ In Chrome, remove Firefox as registered device. Create a new reminder. Notification is shown by none, while a notification in Chrome is expected
✅ Sign on in Firefox. Firefox immediately appears in Chrome as registered device.
❌Create a new reminder. Notification is shown by Firefox only, while notification in both Chrome and Firefox are expected
❌Sign off in Chrome. The "no notification" symbol does not appear in Firefox next to the Chrome device.
✅ Delete Chrome as active device. Create a new reminder. Notification is shown by Firefox only
✅ Sign in into Chrome again. It immediately appears as registered device in Firefox
❌ Create a new reminder. Notification is shown by Firefox only

It seems that somewhere in the process, I bricked the Chrome notifications
In a last effort to reactivate the Chrome notifications, I

Opened the settings in both Chrome and Firefox.
I removed Chrome in Firefox. In both browsers, Chrome disappeared. However, I was still signed on in Chrome
I removed Firefox in Chrome. Only in Firefox, Chrome re-appeared with the no-notification symbol next to it!
I signed off in Chrome and Firefox without doing anything else.
I signed on in Chrome. Only Chrome was in the Registered devices.
❌I created a new notification. No notification was shown on the browser. So it didn't work
Just to make sure: I signed on in Firefox, signed off in Chrome, then removed Chrome as registered device.
✅ I created another new reminder. Notification was shown in Firefox. So that works.

My reminders will repeat their notifications by default (every 5 to 10 minutes) The behaviour is even more fishy when I keep them active, then sign on and off in different browsers, but I don't describe this in detail now because

signing on/off in combination with non-repeating reminders aren't stable yet
this is a border case which might not be very common in a real situation.

Extra: I accidentally created a notification without title. The notification was shown correctly (without title 😉 )
I also tried using an emoji. It worked as well. Then I dumped a generated lorem ipsum text in it. It worked as well 😀

bvado So after hours of debugging and searching I think I have now found the main problem.
New version already uploaded.

1.) First please logout from both browsers.
2.) Refresh in Chrome and Firefox the website. Now you should have the newest version.
4.) Log in again in both and log out afterwards. Now all registered handlers should be removed.
5.) You can start again to login and it should now work as expected.

chrisonline I'm sorry I have to mention that it still doesn't work in Chrome:

I signed off everywhere
I force-refreshed the pages
Signed on in Firefox: notification showed up
Signed on in Chrome: notification showed up
Signing off in Firefox, disables the notifications immediately for Firefox
Signing off in Chrome, notifications still appear. Since I had troubles with Chrome before, I thought to really clear everything, so I went to the settings - site settings - web.colreminder.be -> Clear data
Signing on in Chrome, a second Chrome instance was visible. I removed the inactive instance and signed off. The notifications didn't appear anymore!! So I thought it was fixed.
Then, I signed on again, waited for a notification to appear. It appeared.
Then I signed off again. But the notification was still there 😟 Even when I closed the website (not the browser) and created a new reminder, the new reminder was shown as Chrome notification...
